After we left our ship in Progreso, we traveled inland to the interior of the Yucatan Peninsula. Our first stop was Valladolid Mexico. This small town offers a lovely square and cathedral. We were also able to do some shopping.
A Cathedral
Valladolid has its own Cathedral, like every other Mexican town and city we visited. It was made of limestone, and had a nice patina in the bright sunlight. It also had gorgeous handmade, ancient, ironwork on its massive, wooden doors. I love architectural detail like this.
A Square
The square, like the others we saw in old colonial towns in Mexico, is still a lively part of the community. I loved the you and me chair scattered throughout the square. They made me think of old Victorian courting chairs, except these were outside in a lovely garden setting. I actually think this could be a fun way to enjoy a glass of wine or coffee!
The town square also had a lovely fountain featuring a woman dressed in traditional garb pouring water from a pitcher.
Some Shopping
Across the square from the Cathedral was a pedestrian mall full of small shops featuring local embroidered goods, guayabera shirts for men and boys, masks for everyone, skirts and blouses for women and girls. I could have bought them out, but many did not take credit cards and I did not have that many pesos. Next time I come to Valladolid Mexico I will come prepared with more pesos and more time.
There were dozens of small restaurants and cafes lining the square and radiating down the streets. It seems to be a place where people congregate to start their trips to Chichen Itza. The streets were filled with young hikers and tour groups.
After we left Valladolid, we stopped for lunch and a swim at a hacienda with an onsite cenote. If you have not been in a cenote, you must try it.
